screen.

Six years.

A storage auction.

A stranger’s garage.

And somehow Margaret’s key had remained in Caroline’s safe-deposit box while the lockbox son.

Never delivered.

Inside, Margaret wrote that she forgave him.

She knew fear and debt had made him cooperate with Daniel.

She asked him to stop blaming himself and start telling the truth.

Mark turned away from the screen.

I let him.

When he finally sat again, he said, “Everywhere we look, there's another son who thought taking control was helping.”

I thought about that.

“Maybe because they targeted families where love could be used as pressure.”

Mark looked at me.

“Like ours.”

“Yes.”

Bennett received another call.

Peter Cole was alive.

Sixty-four.

Living two states away.

Police had contacted him.

He agreed to speak.

But he told them something none of us expected.

He had not merely cooperated with Daniel.

For six years, he had been paying Daniel money.

Samuel frowned.

“Why?”

Bennett read from her notes.

“Peter says Daniel told him that if he ever discussed Margaret’s property sale, he could be prosecuted for helping exploit his mother.”

Blackmail.

The same shame that kept him silent became Daniel’s insurance.

“How much?” I asked.

“Nearly sixty thousand dollars over six years.”

Mark sat very still.

Daniel had turned guilt into recurring income.

Not only land.

Not only consulting fees.

Silence itself had a price.

Peter also said Daniel called him two days earlier.

After Raymond’s files began resurfacing.

“What did he want?” Samuel asked.

Bennett looked at me.

“He asked whether Peter still had the original power-of-attorney from the preliminary interview.

Because the original document contains a witness signature from someone Peter never met.

Alicia?

Lisa?

Ruth?

No.

The signature belonged to a name we had not yet encountered.

Marianne Dalton.

Samuel went still.

“Daniel's wife.”

The room fell silent.

I had never heard her name before.

Mark looked at Samuel.

“She was involved?”

Samuel shook his head slowly.

“I don't know.”

“What does she do?”

“Or did?”

Samuel's voice changed.

“She was a licensed social worker.”

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“At elder-care facilities.”

Suddenly the structure widened again.

Daniel had legal access.

Foster supplied medical authority.

Realtors supplied property opportunity.

Facilities supplied placement.

Family supplied emotional leverage.

And Daniel’s wife may have supplied professional credibility around capacity and elder care.

Bennett said Peter was willing to surrender the original documents and testify.

Then she added one more thing.

“Marianne Dalton died three years ago.”

“How?” I it.

If forged, someone had chosen her name for a reason.

Either possibility mattered.

Caroline’s video window remained open.

She stared at Margaret’s letter lying before her.

“I kept thinking I was protecting my sister by staying quiet.”

Nobody interrupted.

“But all I did was make it easier for them to do
