her.”

Peter looked uncomfortable.

“A week later, Daniel told me Marianne had reconsidered.”

“Why?”

“He said she noticed signs Mom was Mark had done with me.

Eventually Margaret signed.

Peter paused and covered his face.

“I told her it was only for bills.”

“Did you know it wasn't?” Bennett asked.

“I knew it did more.”

“How much more?”

“I didn't read everything.”

Bennett let that answer couldn't control.”

I felt cold.

“Why?”

“She said Daniel had used her name on documents.”

There it was.

Marianne had not necessarily been part of the machinery.

She may have been another person trapped inside it.

“What else?” Bennett asked.

“She told me something was happening corporate records showed he had represented Daniel’s brother-in-law in another matter during the same year.

Conflict.

Potentially hidden.

Bennett immediately requested the complaint file and review history.

By afternoon, another connection surfaced.

Thomas Vale had been the attorney who reviewed Margaret Cole’s death settlement with the table.

Karen’s phone rang.

State board investigator.

Marianne’s old complaint had been located.

The full file contained an attachment.

A handwritten statement.

Marianne described seeing Daniel copy client financial information from Samuel’s firm.

She described forged witness signatures.

She named Foster.

Bell.

Crescent.

And one person none of us expected.

Samuel Price.

I looked at Samuel.

His face went blank.

“What does it say?”

Karen read carefully.

“Marianne wrote that Daniel repeatedly told collaborators he had protection inside Price and Dalton and that Samuel Price would never allow the firm to be exposed.”

Samuel stood.

“That is not the same as saying I knew.”

“No,” Bennett said.

“But we need to examine it.”

Samuel looked at me.

I wanted immediate denial.

He gave me something better.

“Examine everything.”

Karen continued.

Marianne also wrote that Daniel kept copies of communications in a private archive “in case Sam ever turns on me.”

That phrase suggested Daniel did not actually believe Samuel was participating.

But it did not remove every question.

“What private archive?” Bennett asked.

Marianne gave a location.

Not an office.

Not a house.

A storage room inside the basement of an old commercial building Daniel once owned with his brother-in-law.

The building still existed.

Current owner?

Crescent Advisory.

A warrant request began.

Mark stared at the address.

“That isn't far from Bruce's office.”

Samuel checked.

Three blocks.

By late afternoon, Bennett's team learned the basement had a separate entrance and no internal building surveillance.

Daniel could have stored records there for years.

“Would he leave them now?” I asked.

“Maybe not.”

“Especially after the stolen church drive.”

“Correct.”

Then Bennett received another call.

The building’s current property manager had checked entry logs from the electronic basement door.

Daniel’s access code had been used at 3:12 that morning.

Seven hours after police began reviewing the backup drive.

He had already gone to the archive.

“Can you stop him?”

“If he's still there.”

A unit was dispatched.

At 4:03, Bennett’s phone rang again.

Nobody spoke while she listened.

Then she stood.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“The basement door is open.”

“Daniel?”

“Gone.”

“Records?”

“Some still there.”

Relief.

Then:

“But there was a fire.”

My stomach dropped.

“How bad?”

“Contained before it spread through the building.”

“Documents?”

“Unknown loss.”

Bennett listened again.

Her expression changed.

“There is someone inside.”

“Who?”

“Male. Unconscious. Smoke exposure.”

“Daniel?”

“No ID yet.”

Twenty minutes later, we learned.

It was not Daniel.

It was Bruce Carter.

Missing for two days.

Found unconscious in the basement where Daniel stored the records Marianne had described.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: Bruce Woke After the Basement Fire With One Warning About Daniel, While Investigators Recovered Records Someone Had Tried to Burn

Peter Cole joined us by video the next morning from a sheriff’s office in Missouri.
