copy.

When Bennett told us, Samuel sat down hard.

“Read it.”

“It’s forty pages.”

“Summarize.”

Bennett had only preliminary details.

Marianne described Daniel’s operation from the inside.

It began with legitimate estate work.

Older clients.

Family disputes.

Property transitions.

Daniel noticed that certain parcels had hidden commercial value.

He began sharing information with Martin Bell.

At first, only public information.

Then confidential.

Bell paid “referral” fees through Crescent.

Later, when owners refused to sell, Daniel began using family pressure.

Marianne wrote that she initially believed he was helping families resolve difficult transitions.

That mattered.

Her early involvement was real.

She met owners.

Spoke to adult children.

Explained care options.

Then she discovered Daniel was misrepresenting her assessments.

She never diagnosed dementia.

She never authorized guardianship petitions.

Yet her name appeared on documents implying she did.

She confronted him.

He promised to stop.

He did not.

Then came Margaret Cole.

Marianne met her and found her entirely competent.

Daniel used Marianne’s name anyway.

That was when she began collecting evidence.

She contacted the state board.

The complaint disappeared into Thomas Vale’s review.

She realized official channels might be compromised.

Then she approached Raymond Hayes.

I stared at Bennett.

“Marianne knew Raymond directly?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

She had read Daniel’s notes naming him as interference.

Marianne went to our property one afternoon while I was away at a medical appointment with Raymond.

But she did not meet me.

She spoke to Raymond in the workshop.

That explained why he suddenly knew so much.

“What did she give him?”

“Copies of several suspicious property transfers.”

“Did Daniel know?”

“Eventually.”

Marianne believed Daniel discovered their contact by checking her phone.

That led to threats.

Not physical threats against her.

Against me.

Again.

I felt anger rise.

My name had been Daniel’s favorite pressure point for years.

Marianne wrote that Raymond refused to stop investigating even after Daniel warned him.

But after Margaret died, Raymond became more cautious.

He believed Daniel might escalate.

Marianne disagreed.

She wanted immediate police action.

Raymond wanted stronger proof.

Then his cancer worsened.

Their effort collapsed.

Marianne kept collecting.

The affidavit named Foster.

Bell.

Crescent.

Vale.

Several facility employees.

And one early participant still alive.

Lisa’s predecessor.

A facility placement coordinator named Grace Holloway.

“Where is Grace?” I asked.

Karen searched.

Retired.

Living locally.

Bennett’s team had already dispatched officers.

The affidavit also included a statement about Margaret’s death.

Marianne wrote that Daniel came home that evening with blood on his shirt cuff.

The room around me seemed to narrow.

“Blood?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

That he cut his hand on a metal railing.

“Was he injured?”

Marianne saw no cut.

That was not proof the blood was Margaret’s.

But it was the closest thing yet to physical suspicion.

Marianne wrote that Daniel burned the shirt that night.

Not discarded.

Burned.

In their backyard fire pit.

“What did Marianne do?”

Collected ashes?

No.

Photographed him burning it through the kitchen window.

The photograph was listed as Attachment 14.

Julia’s copy of the affidavit included printed exhibits.

Attachment 14 was there.

A photograph of Daniel beside a fire pit.

Dark shirt in flames.

Timestamp.

The evening Margaret died.

My skin went cold.

Still circumstantial.

But powerful.

Marianne’s affidavit explained why Daniel feared the original.

A sworn statement from his wife.

Firsthand observations.

Documents.

Photographs.

Dates.

Names.

Not enough alone to convict him of everything.

Enough to destroy the illusion that each case was isolated.

“Where is the original affidavit?” Samuel asked.

Julia did not know.

Helen took it.

Along with original photographs and some documents.

“Why not leave them with her daughter?”

Because, according to Julia, Helen said:

Marianne told me never keep all the truth under one roof.

I almost smiled despite the fear.

Marianne had learned from living with Daniel.

Divide evidence.

Create copies.

Trust redundancy.

The same strategy had allowed Alicia’s backup drive to survive the church theft.

People who lived around Daniel learned not to keep one version of anything.

The next question was Helen.

Where had she gone after leaving Julia’s office?

Taxi records showed another destination.

Bus terminal.

She bought a ticket under her own name.

Destination:

Oakridge.

A rural town eighty miles north.

“What is in Oakridge?” I asked.

Samuel knew before anyone searched.

“Marianne’s childhood home.”

Helen and Marianne had inherited it jointly after their parents died.

Marianne transferred her share to Helen years ago.

The house sat empty.

Used occasionally for holidays.

Police raced there.

Nobody inside.

But signs of recent presence.

Coffee cup.

Open drawer.

A suitcase.

And in the upstairs bedroom, a note on the mirror.

Not for police.

Not for Daniel.

For Julia.

Only one sentence.

Think of where Aunt Marianne hid our Christmas gifts.

Julia cried when Bennett read it.

She knew immediately.

“When they were children,” Bennett relayed, “Marianne hid presents inside the old piano bench.”

Police checked.

The piano remained downstairs.

Bench seat opened.

Empty.

Fresh scratches inside.

Someone had already searched it.

My heart dropped.

“Daniel?”

“Unknown.”

But beneath the bench, officers found a torn piece of brown wrapping paper.

On it, Helen had written numbers.

12-7-3.

Julia didn't recognize them.

I stared at the numbers.

Neither did I.

Mark arrived as Bennett repeated them.

“Twelve-seven-three?”

“Yes.”

He frowned.

“Could be locker Maybe Lisa is how she knew.”

Exactly.

The family connection ran backward.

Not Alicia bringing Lisa in.

Lisa bringing Alicia closer to Daniel’s methods.

At 6:30, Bennett received the interview report from Helen.

Before Lisa locked her in the motel, Lisa said:

Daniel thinks this is his system. He forgets who taught him how to make old people disappear on paper.

Bennett repeated the sentence slowly.

“Who taught him?”

Nobody knew.

Marianne's affidavit might.

We searched.

Then found the section on Grace Holloway.

Marianne wrote:

Grace says the method predates Daniel. She learned it from an administrator who used family pressure and capacity claims to move resistant residents before property sales. Daniel recognized the financial potential and expanded it.

My skin crawled.

Daniel had industrialized something that already existed.

“Administrator name?” I asked.

Samuel read.

Agnes Mercer.

Mercer.

Everyone went still.

“Related to Lisa?”

Karen searched.

Agnes Mercer.

Former administrator.

Mother of Grace's closest friend?

No.

Then personnel records clarified.

Agnes Mercer was Ruth Mercer’s mother.

Lisa’s grandmother.

The method ran through the Mercer family before Daniel ever appeared.

Not necessarily criminal at first.

Maybe abusive elder-placement practices.

Maybe questionable family arrangements.

Daniel had turned it into a property-acquisition business.

Lisa had grown up around it.

Ruth had impersonated me.

Elaine notarized.

Lisa created records.

The network was older than Daniel.

But Daniel made it profitable.

Mark whispered, “So who is actually running this now?”

Nobody answered.

At 7:04, Bennett’s phone rang one final time.

Officers had just found Lisa’s gray sedan.

Abandoned near the river.

Inside:

Helen's purse.

The burner phone.

A half-empty bottle of water.

And a handwritten list.

Four names crossed out.

One remained.

Dorothy Hayes.

Beside my name, two words:

FINAL LEVER.

I stared at the photograph of the note.

For days, I had believed Daniel was the person deciding when my pressure would escalate.

Now I no longer knew whether Lisa was fleeing from him, working for him, or preparing to use me for something neither of them had yet attempted.

What I did know was simpler.

My name was the only one left uncrossed.

And someone still believed there was one more way to make me surrender.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: The Words Beside My Name Made Me the Last Target, but Lisa’s Abandoned Phone Revealed She Was Running From Someone Too

By midnight, Helen Cross had been missing for at least eight hours.
