answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Tessa was already moving.

“Address.”

Daniel gave it.

Police near the cabin were contacted.

We waited.

Ten minutes.

Fifteen.

Twenty-three.

Finally Tessa received a call.

She listened without interrupting.

Then looked at us.

“Ruth is alive.”

I exhaled.

“What happened?”

“Someone entered through the back.”

“Andrew?”

“She didn’t see his face.”

“Was anything taken?”

“The photograph.”

Of course.

“Anything else?”

“The remaining accident file.”

“Everything?”

“Almost.”

“What’s left?”

Tessa’s expression changed.

“One envelope.”

“For whom?”

“Elena.”

Another message arrived.

A photograph from the responding officer showed the envelope.

My mother’s handwriting.

FOR ELENA — AFTER YOU KNOW ABOUT VINCENT.

I stared at it.

“Open it.”

The officer did, with Ruth’s permission.

Inside was a single handwritten letter from my mother.

Tessa read the photograph aloud.

Elena,

If this reaches you, then the truth has survived longer than I expected.

Vincent did not die because of the money.

The money was the reason everyone misunderstood his death.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Tessa continued.

The brakes were damaged before he went to the garage.

I know because Vincent showed me.

He believed the damage was meant for someone else.

My heartbeat accelerated.

Someone else.

Tessa read the next line.

The car was not originally supposed to be his that week.

He borrowed it from Victor.

The room went silent.

Victor’s car.

The cut brake lines may have been intended for Victor.

That reversed twenty-six years of suspicion.

My mother continued.

Vincent thought Andrew had tried to kill Victor.

He planned to prove it.

I closed my eyes.

Andrew had motive to eliminate Victor, whose companies and signatures he was exploiting.

Vincent discovered the attempt.

Then took the damaged car himself after someone falsely claimed it had been repaired.

Tessa read the last paragraph.

James never believed this.

He thought Victor caused Vincent’s death.

Victor thought James stole from him.

Andrew needed both men to believe the other was guilty.

Do not make their mistake.

Follow the person who benefits from every version of the story.

There was only one person who had benefited no matter whom we suspected.

Andrew.

Tessa turned to the final line.

My mother had underlined it.

And Elena—

If Andrew ever asks for the trust, never give it to him.

The trust was not built merely to protect our money from him.

It was built to prove where his money came from.

Daniel whispered, “What does that mean?”

I looked toward the brown ledger.

The trust.

Account 8841.

The hidden investments.

The companies.

Suddenly the structure no longer looked like inheritance planning.

It looked like an evidence vault.

My parents had not merely moved assets away from Andrew.

They had preserved his transactions inside a structure he could not control.

Every transfer.

Every company.

Every stolen dollar.

If the trust records were intact, they could expose not just what Andrew had taken from my family—

but decades of money he had hidden through theirs.

And that explained why he needed my deed, my signature, the ledger, and the forged amendment.

He did not need my house.

He needed control of the trust before anyone opened it completely.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Andrew.

One sentence.

YOU FINALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR PARENTS BUILT.

Then another arrived.

SO NOW YOU UNDERSTAND WHY THEY HAVE TO DIE WITH IT.

<a
