more.

Bedroom corridor.

Living room.

Kitchen.

Study.

Someone had installed them before Robert arrived.

Perhaps days ago.

Perhaps weeks.

Andrew had been watching us from inside.

Daniel went pale.

“He knew about the ledger because he heard us.”

Tessa swore.

“He knows about the schedules.”

My phone rang.

Andrew.

I answered.

“What do you want?”

“No greeting?”

“Try prison.”

He laughed.

“You found 5506.”

I said nothing.

“You’re becoming competent, Elena.”

“Disappointed?”

“Actually, impressed.”

“Why threaten my children if you’re so impressed?”

“Because intelligence is irritating when it stops being useful.”

“You’re finished.”

“Not yet.”

“You admitted forging the amendment.”

“Financial fraud has statutes, lawyers, jurisdictional problems.”

“You threatened us.”

“You’ll need to prove it.”

“We have the account.”

Silence.

For the first time, I had touched something that mattered.

I continued.

“Thirty-two million dollars tied to your companies and your payments.”

Andrew’s voice cooled.

“You don’t know what those payments were.”

“Investigators will enjoy asking.”

Another pause.

Then he said, “You’re missing Schedule F.”

I looked at Daniel.

He heard.

“So?”

“Without F, you cannot prove ownership of 5506.”

Daniel checked the documents.

Andrew might be right.

Schedules B through D showed transfers toward 5506.

But ultimate beneficial ownership could depend on the missing final schedule.

“Who has F?” I asked.

Andrew laughed.

“You do.”

“What?”

“Margaret gave it to you.”

“No.”

“You’ve had it for years.”

“Where?”

“The only place she knew Robert would never look.”

Robert muttered, “That narrows it down to most of the house.”

Andrew continued.

“Your mother told me once that you kept one thing from childhood no one else was allowed to touch.”

My breath caught.

A cedar box.

Small.

Worn.

Containing letters, school photographs, my grandmother’s necklace, and childhood keepsakes.

I had moved it from house to house.

Robert knew it existed.

He had never opened it because I once made him promise not to.

I ran upstairs.

The cedar box sat on the top shelf of my closet.

Underneath photographs was a sealed envelope I had always assumed contained one of my grandmother’s letters.

I had never opened it because the front said:

FOR ELENA WHEN FAMILY STOPS MEANING WHAT SHE THOUGHT.

My hands shook.

Inside was Schedule F.

And a note from my mother.

Andrew had been right.

Which meant he knew my mother’s private instructions better than I wanted to imagine.

I returned downstairs.

Andrew was still on speaker.

“I found it.”

“I knew you would.”

“Then you lose.”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“Because Schedule F is incomplete.”

I looked down.

At the bottom, one annex was referenced.

F-1.

Not attached.

Daniel swore.

“What is F-1?” I asked.

Andrew’s voice softened.

“The document that identifies the real owner of account 5506.”

“Where is it?”

“With me.”

Of course.

“What do you want?”

“The ledger. Original deed.
