after three months, I did not miss the car as much as I expected.

I missed spontaneity.

So we rebuilt that.

Margaret showed me how to schedule rides.

Lucas added later.

Five people around a table.

Not frightened.

Prepared.

That was different.

Our family once used documents to hide choices.

Now we used them to preserve them.

That felt like a worthy correction.

Months later, Margaret asked whether she could include the driving story in the oral history.

“Yes.”

“Even the curb?”

“One tire.”

“Two.”

“History remains contested.”

She laughed.

Then asked, “What was the hardest part?”

“Giving you the keys.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew I wasn’t getting them back.”

She nodded.

“Did I do okay?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“You waited for me to hand them over.”

“What if you hadn’t?”

That question stayed between us.

Eventually I answered.

“Then you might have needed to stop me.”

She looked uncomfortable.

“Would that have been control?”

“Yes.”

Her face tightened.

“And sometimes necessary.”

That surprised her.

“Then how do you know when?”

“You don’t always.”

I looked at her.

“That is why power should make you uncomfortable.”

She nodded.

“If taking away someone’s choice feels easy, you should be suspicious of yourself.”

“And if it feels terrible?”

“You can still be wrong.”

She laughed softly.

“That’s not helpful.”

“It’s true.”

She switched off the recorder.

The lesson had changed again.

Agency was not a slogan.

It was work.

Sometimes protecting choice meant stepping aside.

Sometimes it meant creating safeguards before choice became impaired.

And sometimes love would require making a decision another person hated.

The difference was not whether control occurred.

The difference was whether it served the person whose freedom was limited—or the comfort of the person doing the limiting.

I wished my parents had understood that.

I was glad Margaret might.

Click here to continue reading: PART 38: The Day I Moved Into Assisted Living,
