hands.

My father’s inheritance.

The trust.

The lake house.

Enough.

As if enough money removed the possibility of theft.

As if being secure made me available for plunder.

Nina asked, “Did you advise against the structure?”

“I advised against proceeding without reviewing the trust.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No.”

At least he did not pretend otherwise.

My phone vibrated.

Omar again.

He had found another file.

A letter from the lender connected to Prescott Capital Partners.

Default notice.

Three weeks old.

Nine-million-dollar principal.

Accrued interest.

Cure deadline: ten days.

Ten days.

The sale had not been a future plan.

It had been Daniel’s emergency exit.

And I had blocked it.

Simon saw the date.

His face changed.

“That’s sooner than I knew.”

“What happens in ten days?”

He did not answer.

Nina asked again.

“Mr. Vale.”

He exhaled.

“The lender can pursue Daniel personally.”

“And his Prescott Logistics shares?”

“Potentially.”

My thoughts raced.

If Daniel’s thirty-nine percent became entangled in enforcement, company control could become chaotic.

But I still held fifty-one percent.

Unless my voting rights disappeared first.

The forged restructuring documents were not merely about increasing sale proceeds.

They were about making sure Daniel could deliver control before his personal financial collapse became visible.

I looked at Simon.

“Who is the lender?”

He hesitated too long.

“Tell me.”

“Marwood Capital.”

Nina typed the name.

Then stopped.

“Marwood.”

Her voice changed.

“You know them?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“They’re not a traditional lender.”

“What are they?”

“Distressed-asset investors.”

Simon looked irritated.

“They also make private credit loans.”

“To people who are desperate.”

He did not answer.

Nina turned her laptop toward me.

Marwood Capital specialized in acquiring debt linked to troubled companies and using default rights to obtain equity or control.

I stared at the screen.

“They wanted Daniel to fail.”

Simon shook his head.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because they wanted the sale.”

“Or they wanted leverage.”

“Claire—”

“Stop saying my name like we’re colleagues.”

He closed his mouth.

I looked at Nina.

“If Daniel defaults, Marwood may go after his shares.”

“Yes.”

“And if my voting rights had already been stripped through forged paperwork?”

“Then the ownership structure could be vulnerable.”

The entire scheme changed shape again.

Maybe Daniel thought he was stealing my company to save himself.

Maybe someone else expected him to fail while doing it.

Either way, Prescott Logistics sat in the middle.

I stood.

“We’re going to the lake house.”

Nina gathered the documents.

Simon remained seated.

“You need to understand something.”

I turned.

He opened his briefcase.

Slowly.

Nina immediately said, “Hands where we can see them.”

Simon gave her an irritated look and removed a single folder.

He placed it on the table.

“This came from Andrew.”

“What is it?”

“A copy of a trust summary.”

I did not touch it.

Nina did.

She opened the folder.

Inside was an old memorandum bearing my father’s attorney’s letterhead.

Henry Morgan Estate Planning.

Subject: Protective Control Provisions.

Nina read silently.

Her eyes moved faster.

Then stopped.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Your father anticipated this.”

A chill ran through me.

“What exactly?”

She turned the page.

The language was dense, but one paragraph had been highlighted years ago in blue ink.

If assets originating from the Morgan Family Trust were used to capitalize an operating entity, any attempted involuntary dilution, unauthorized transfer, or fraudulent impairment of Claire Morgan’s controlling interest could trigger a reversionary claim through the trust.

I stared at the words.

“What does that mean?”

Nina read further.

“It may mean Prescott Holdings assets linked to your original capital revert into direct trust protection if someone tries to strip your control without consent.”

“May?”

“We need the full documents.”

Simon said quietly, “That clause is why I told Daniel to stop.”

I looked at him.

“Yet you kept advising him.”

“He wouldn’t stop.”

“So you kept billing him.”

His mouth tightened.

Fair.

Nina turned another page.

Then she froze.

“What?”

She looked toward Simon.

“Where did Andrew get this?”

“I don’t know.”

“Answer carefully.”

“I don’t know.”

Nina showed me the final page.

A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

Small.

Precise.

Slanted slightly left.

It read:

If Claire’s trust is ever used against her by a spouse, partner, creditor, or successor, control returns to Claire before value leaves her hands.

My throat tightened.

For the first time since the anniversary dinner, grief struck harder than anger.

My father had been gone twelve years.

Yet somehow, sitting in a gray conference room with my marriage collapsing around me, I was looking at evidence that he had imagined a future in which someone might mistake my loyalty for weakness.

He had protected me without knowing Daniel.

Without knowing Prescott Logistics.

Without knowing any of this.

He simply knew people.

Nina closed the folder.

“We need the originals.”

Simon stood.

“You also need to move quickly.”

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because Daniel knows this memo exists.”

My body went still.

“How?”

“Andrew told him yesterday.”

“Yesterday?”

“Before your anniversary dinner.”

The timeline snapped into place.

Daniel had gone into that dinner knowing the trust might block the sale.

Knowing his loan was approaching default.

Knowing he needed my consent.

Knowing the family was waiting for money.

Knowing the transaction could collapse.

And then he had provoked me on camera.

Maybe the dinner was not simply evidence for divorce.

Maybe it was pressure.

A setup.

A final attempt to push me into emotional chaos while he moved faster behind the scenes.

Nina asked, “What did Daniel say when Andrew told him?”

Simon picked up his briefcase.

“He said it didn’t matter.”

“Why?”

Simon looked at me.

“Because he had already arranged to get the original trust documents.”

My breath stopped.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“They’re at my lake house.”

Simon’s expression changed.

Then he understood before I did.

Nina stood.

“Claire.”

I was already reaching for my phone.

The lake house security system.

I opened the app.

The cameras loaded slowly.

Front porch.

Empty.

Driveway.

Empty.

Rear door.

Nothing.

Then the event log appeared.

Motion detected.

Forty-seven minutes earlier.

Rear entry.

I opened the clip.

A man in a dark jacket approached the back door.

He looked directly toward the camera.

Andrew Bell.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Andrew Entered My Lake House Looking for the Trust, but the Camera Revealed
