He did not approach the front door. He went directly toward the rear deck, where a narrow entry opened into the mudroom beside the kitchen.

He knew the property.

That bothered me almost as much as his presence.

Andrew had visited the lake house once, nine years earlier, when Prescott Logistics was still small enough that executive retreats meant four people sitting around my father’s dining table with legal pads and cheap coffee.

He should not have remembered which door stuck in winter.

Apparently, he did.

On the video, Andrew reached beneath the porch railing.

My stomach tightened.

“No.”

Nina looked over my shoulder.

“What?”

I dragged the timeline backward.

Andrew bent again.

His hand disappeared beneath the lowest rail.

Then he straightened holding something metallic.

A key.

I felt cold all over.

“There’s an emergency key under there.”

Nina’s expression sharpened.

“Who knows?”

“My father knew. I knew. Daniel knew.”

“Andrew?”

“I never told him.”

We watched as Andrew unlocked the rear door and disappeared inside.

The event clip ended.

I loaded the interior camera.

The kitchen appeared empty for several seconds.

Then Andrew entered.

He closed the door behind him and stood still.

Not like a burglar deciding where to search.

Like a man making sure nobody else was present.

He looked toward the hallway leading to my father’s study.

Then he walked directly there.

“He knows exactly where he’s going,” Nina said.

I did not answer.

The study camera had been installed only two years earlier after a plumbing leak damaged part of the ceiling. It was positioned high in the corner, mostly to catch water intrusion alerts and motion when the house was vacant.

Andrew entered the frame.

He went to my father’s desk.

Opened the center drawer.

Nothing.

Second drawer.

Nothing.

Then he crouched beside the built-in bookcase.

My pulse quickened.

Behind the bottom shelf was a small wall safe.

Daniel knew about it.

He had watched me open it.

Andrew pulled something from his pocket.

A folded paper.

He read it.

Then turned the dial.

“He has the combination,” I whispered.

Nina said nothing.

The safe opened.

For a few seconds, Andrew’s body blocked the camera.

Then he stepped aside.

Inside the safe were three archival folders, two old watches, my father’s passport, and a small metal document box.

Andrew reached for the folders.

He opened the first.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His movements became faster.

He was searching for something specific.

The Morgan Family Trust schedule.

I knew exactly where it was.

Not inside those folders.

My father never stored the complete schedule in the obvious place.

He had used a fireproof document compartment beneath the built-in window seat.

Daniel did not know that.

Neither, apparently, did Andrew.

I exhaled slowly.

“He won’t find it.”

Nina looked at me.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Then we should call the mean we let him keep searching.”

“I know.”

My fingers hovered over the alarm app.

Then another motion alert appeared.

Driveway.

A black SUV turned onto the gravel.

For one second, I thought it was law enforcement.

Then the passenger door opened.

Daniel stepped out.

Nina swore softly.

My husband looked toward the house.

He wore the same navy suit from the board meeting.

No overcoat.

No umbrella.

He moved quickly.

Andrew came out through the front door before Daniel reached it.

The camera microphone captured fragments.

Daniel: “Did you get it?”

Andrew shook his head.

“Not there.”

Daniel said something too low to hear.

Andrew answered more clearly.

“She moved it.”

Daniel looked toward the house.

Then toward Andrew.

“Did you check the study?”

“Everywhere.”

“She wouldn’t move those papers.”

“She did.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Then he said the sentence that removed the last uncertainty.

“Find the original before Claire gets here.”

Nina looked at me.

“Call the sheriff.”

I did.

We stayed at headquarters.

Driving toward the lake house while Daniel and Andrew were inside made no sense, no matter how badly I wanted to confront them.

I gave dispatch the address, explained that unauthorized people had entered a private residence, and told them I had live video.

The dispatcher asked whether the people were armed.

“I don’t know.”

“Do not approach.”

“I’m not there.”

“Good.”

We watched.

Daniel entered the house.

Andrew remained outside making a call.

Less than a minute later, another vehicle appeared.

A silver sedan.

A woman got out.

Mid-forties.

Dark hair.

Gray raincoat.

I did not recognize her.

Simon Vale did.

He had remained in the conference room because Nina asked security not to let anyone leave with company documents until counsel finished determining what belonged to whom.

He leaned closer to the screen.

“That’s Marwood’s the lender might believe it had access to assets Daniel did not own.

If Marwood knew I controlled the company and funded the scheme anyway, something uglier was happening.

The study camera showed Daniel now.

He searched faster than Andrew had.

He pulled folders from shelves.

Opened cabinets.

Checked beneath the desk.

Then he stopped.

Looked directly at the camera.

I froze.

He had noticed it.

Daniel stepped closer.

His face filled the screen.

For one moment, he stared upward.

Then he reached.

The image jerked sideways.

Black.

“He disabled it,” Nina said.

The kitchen camera remained active.

Andrew me.

Daniel pointed toward the hallway.

“They’re not in the safe.”

Celia said, “Then she has another storage point.”

Andrew looked windows.

Then toward the built-in seating.

My breath caught.

He remembered.

Years earlier, I had told him my father liked hidden storage because he distrusted box.”

He did.

The sight of him carrying my father’s document case through the hallway broke something in me that the dinner had not.

Money could be traced.

Shares could be restored.

Contracts could be challenged.

But seeing Daniel lift my father’s papers as though they were tools in his escape plan made the
