1 – I Thought I Could Protect My Daughter From Anything Until She Let Go of My Hand on a Chicago Sidewalk

I used to believe there was nothing in this world that could make me helpless.

Not another man.

Not a threat.

Not even the possibility of dying.

I had spent years making certain that people feared me more than I feared them.

My name was Damien Moretti.

I was thirty-nine years old, and in Chicago, my name carried a meaning I had worked hard to establish.

People knew what I was.

They knew the men who answered to me.

They knew that I did not make empty threats.

I had built a life where most problems could be handled before they ever reached my front door.

Money helped.

Power helped.

Fear helped most of all.

At least, that was what I had always believed.

Then one afternoon, my five-year-old daughter pulled her hand from mine.

And everything I thought I understood about my life began to feel uncertain.

Her name was Sophie.

She was the one person who could make me forget what kind of man I had become.

I could walk into a room full of dangerous people without changing my expression.

But one smile from that little girl could make me stop thinking about business altogether.

I knew how that sounded.

A man like me talking about his daughter as though she were the center of everything.

But she was.

I had never been particularly good at being gentle.

Sophie made me try.

That afternoon, we were walking through one of Chicago's expensive shopping districts.

It was bright outside.

The kind of afternoon when the sun reflected from store windows and made the sidewalk look cleaner than it really was.

People passed us carrying shopping bags.

Some were talking.

Some were looking into storefronts.

Others were moving quickly, hardly noticing anyone around them.

There were flower planters outside the shops.

Their colors stood out against the polished windows and gray concrete.

I remember those flowers.

I remember them because I had no reason to think they mattered.

Nothing about that street seemed unusual.

Nothing about that afternoon seemed important.

Looking back, that was the part I misunderstood.

I thought ordinary moments were safe simply because they looked ordinary.

I was wearing a brown suit.

It fitted closely across my shoulders, the way I preferred.

My white shirt was open at the neck.

Some of the dark ink across my collarbone showed above the fabric.

I rarely thought about those tattoos anymore.

They were part of me.

Part of the life I had chosen.

Part of the reputation that followed me wherever I went.

Sophie was dressed very differently.

She wore a cream-colored dress, the kind that looked too delicate for a crowded city sidewalk.

There was a large ivory bow tucked into her chestnut hair.

Her curls fell around her face.

She had fair skin and gray eyes that always seemed to notice more than I expected.

I was used to people looking at me.

That afternoon, I was more interested in looking at her.

She was so small beside me.

Her hand barely filled mine.

I could close my fingers around it without trying.

That simple fact made me careful.

Not because I worried about my strength.

Because I knew hers was nothing compared with mine.

I had to remember that.

I had to remember that the hand I used to control men was also the hand holding my daughter.

There was a black armored car waiting for us.

It stood ahead, ready to take us away from the crowded street.

I had walked toward that kind of vehicle so many times that I barely gave it a thought.

The car was familiar.

The street was familiar.

Even the attention people gave me was familiar.

I expected Sophie and me to reach the vehicle.

I expected to help her inside.

I expected the afternoon to continue.

That was all.

I had no reason to imagine anything else.

Sophie walked close to my side.

Her little fingers were wrapped around mine.

I had adjusted my pace to match hers.

It was something I did without thinking.

In most parts of my life, people adjusted themselves to me.

With Sophie, I did the adjusting.

I was perfectly content with that.

I remember looking ahead toward the car.

I remember the movement of people between the shops.

I remember how warm the sunlight felt against the open collar of my shirt.

And then I felt a sharp pull.

At first, I thought Sophie's hand had slipped.

But it had not slipped.

She had pulled away.

Hard.

Her fingers broke free of mine.

I stopped.

It happened so suddenly that my body reacted before my mind understood.

One moment, she had been walking beside me.

The next, she was standing still.

Right there on the sidewalk.

People kept moving around us.

Shopping bags swung past.

Shoes struck the concrete.

The whole street continued as though nothing had happened.

But Sophie was no longer looking at me.

She was staring toward the curb.

Her arm came up.

One small finger pointed toward a flower stand.

I followed the direction of that finger.

Not immediately.

First, I looked at my daughter.

I wanted to know what had made her stop.

Sophie was not simply distracted by something pretty.

I knew that from her face.

She was frightened.

Or confused.

Perhaps both.

Her gray eyes were wide.

Her mouth had opened slightly.

She seemed unable to look away from whatever had caught her attention.

I had seen Sophie become excited before.

I had seen her surprised.

This was different.

She looked as though she had found something that did not belong in the world she knew.

My first thought was danger.

That was not a father's first thought.

It was a criminal's.

And I hated how naturally it came.

I turned sharply.

My shoulders tightened.

My free hand moved toward the weapon concealed beneath my suit.

I had not seen anyone threatening us.

I had not heard a warning.

But Sophie had pulled away from me without hesitation, and I knew something had caused it.

In my world, hesitation could be expensive.

I did not intend to hesitate with my daughter standing beside me.

I looked toward the flower stand.

I expected to find a man watching us.

Someone armed.

Someone waiting for a chance.

Someone who had made the mistake of bringing danger close to my child.

I was ready for that.

I understood that kind of situation.

I understood how to respond when a person threatened me.

I knew how to keep my face still.

How to watch hands.

How to recognize movement.

How to make a decision before anyone else realized a decision was necessary.

Those were things I had learned over years.

And for a few seconds, I believed I might need every one of them.

Then I saw where Sophie was pointing.

There was no man standing there.

No weapon raised.

No obvious threat.

There was a little girl sitting on the concrete.

A child.

Small.

Quiet.

Almost hidden beside the flower stand.

I could see a worn dress.

A pair of old shoes.

Something soft held in her hands.

My hand stopped moving.

I stared at her.

I did not yet understand what I was seeing.

Not completely.

But I knew that something about this child had made Sophie release my hand.

And I knew that whatever it was, it had nothing to do with the danger I had expected.

I looked more closely.

The girl lifted her face enough for me to see her properly.

That was when I forgot about the car.

I forgot about the people.

I even forgot about the weapon beneath my jacket.

Because the little girl sitting on the sidewalk had my daughter's eyes.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Little
