5 – I Waited for the Little Girl to Speak Because I Thought Her Voice Might Explain the Face I Could Not Understand

I thought hearing her voice would help.

That was the first mistake I made after I stopped staring at her face.

I had convinced myself that the sound of her words might separate her from Sophie in my mind.

Two children could look alike.

I understood that.

But perhaps they would sound different.

Perhaps the moment this little girl opened her mouth, I would finally feel that I was looking at a stranger.

I needed that feeling.

More than I wanted to admit.

The little girl remained seated beside the flower stand.

Her faded red dress touched the concrete.

Her old shoes pointed toward the crowded sidewalk.

She held the beige rabbit against her body.

I could see her fingers curled around its soft fabric.

They were small fingers.

Just like Sophie's.

I looked down at my daughter.

She had stopped pointing.

Her hand hung beside her cream-colored dress.

She was still watching the girl.

I wanted to reach for her.

But I hesitated.

Not because I was afraid to touch my daughter.

Because I had become so distracted by the resemblance that I suddenly felt uncertain about what I should do next.

That was not a feeling I was used to.

I made decisions for a living.

Sometimes those decisions affected more people than I cared to count.

I had learned to act while other men were still thinking.

Yet I could not decide whether to speak to a five-year-old child sitting beside some flowers.

I looked at the little girl again.

Her gray eyes met mine.

I had expected curiosity.

Perhaps fear.

After all, I was a large man in a dark brown suit, standing only a short distance away.

My tattoos were visible above the open collar of my white shirt.

I knew what I looked like.

People had stepped away from me for less.

But this child was not watching my clothes.

She was looking at my face.

Then her eyes moved toward Sophie.

I followed her glance.

For one brief moment, both girls were looking at each other.

I felt something tighten inside me.

They were so alike.

The same round cheeks.

The same little mouth.

The same gray eyes.

Even the way the sunlight reached their curls made the resemblance harder to ignore.

The only obvious difference was how the world had treated their appearances that afternoon.

One child wore an ivory bow.

The other had unbrushed hair.

One stood in a cream dress.

The other sat in faded red.

I found myself wondering how a change of clothing could make the same face seem to belong to two entirely different lives.

Then I stopped myself.

I did not know the other girl's life.

I had no right to write it for her.

All I knew was what I could see.

The worn shoes.

The old dress.

The rabbit.

And that face.

I drew a slow breath.

For years, I had believed that any difficult situation could be divided into facts.

Find out what happened.

Find out who was involved.

Decide what to do.

That approach had served me well in my business.

It was useless here.

I knew who Sophie was.

I knew who I was.

But I did not know anything about the little girl in front of us.

The simplest thing would have been to ask.

Yet even that felt strangely difficult.

What could I say?

Why do you look like my daughter?

Who are you?

Where did you come from?

Each question sounded harsh inside my head.

And she was only a child.

I did not want to frighten her.

I had frightened enough people in my life.

I did not need to add a little girl holding a rabbit to that list.

Sophie shifted her feet beside me.

The movement brought me back to her.

She looked up.

"Daddy?"

I turned toward her.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

She looked past me again.

The child by the flowers had not moved.

Sophie spoke quietly.

"She really looks like me."

I nodded.

"I see it."

That was all I could give her.

Three words.

I see it.

I wish I could say those words had reassured her.

They had not.

Her gaze returned to the little girl.

I knew my daughter was trying to fit what she saw into something she already understood.

At five, she knew what a reflection was.

She knew that the face in a mirror moved when she moved.

She knew that it disappeared when she stepped away.

But this face was different.

It was sitting on the sidewalk.

It belonged to someone who was looking back.

I could almost see the question forming in Sophie's mind.

I had no answer ready.

The girl in red adjusted her grip on the rabbit.

The movement was slight.

Her fingers pressed into the beige fabric.

I noticed it because I had been watching her so closely.

It struck me how unfair my attention might feel to her.

A strange man and his daughter had stopped walking.

Both were looking directly at her.

I had spent my life making people aware of my presence.

But I did not want this child to feel cornered.

I deliberately relaxed my shoulders.

I moved my hand away from the front of my jacket.

I was painfully aware of the weapon beneath it.

A moment earlier, I had reached toward that weapon because I believed Sophie might be in danger.

Now the thought embarrassed me.

The girl had done nothing.

She was not a threat.

She was not even standing.

She was simply there.

The danger I had imagined existed only in my first reaction.

I looked toward the black car.

It waited beyond the flow of pedestrians.

I could have taken Sophie there.

I could have closed the armored door and driven away.

I could have told myself that two children happened to look alike.

Perhaps, given enough time, I might even have believed it.

But I knew that if I walked away, I would remember this face.

I would remember it at dinner.

I would remember it whenever Sophie smiled.

Every time I saw her gray eyes, I would wonder about the child beside the flowers.

And I would remember that I had chosen not to listen.

The thought settled heavily in me.

I looked again at the rabbit.

Beige fabric.

Little fingers.

A faded dress.

I had seen powerful men try to impress me with expensive watches, jewelry, and cars.

None of those things had ever held my attention like that small stuffed animal.

I kept looking at it because it reminded me that the child was real.

Not a trick of the light.

Not something I had imagined.

A real child with a real toy.

Sophie was watching her.

I was watching her.

And the girl was watching us.

I realized that all three of us were waiting.

For what, I could not have said.

An explanation.

A question.

Perhaps just the first word.

The girl lifted her chin slightly.

I felt my pulse quicken.

Her lips parted.

I had wanted her to speak.

Now that she seemed ready, I was afraid of hearing her.

That made no sense.

I knew it made no sense.

But fear rarely asked my permission.

I glanced at Sophie.

The ivory bow in her curls looked almost painfully bright in the sunshine.

She stood so close that I could have reached down and taken her hand.

I wanted to do that.

I wanted the familiar warmth of her fingers.

But the little girl's mouth had opened.

I looked back.

The words did not come immediately.

She seemed to be gathering them.

I remembered how Sophie had struggled to describe what she saw.

I wondered whether this child was struggling too.

There were only a few feet between them.

Yet the differences in their clothing made that short distance feel much larger.

I thought about how little I knew.

I did not know whether the girl recognized the resemblance as clearly as Sophie did.

I did not know if she was frightened or merely surprised.

I did not know what she would say.

I had spent years anticipating danger before it arrived.

But I could not anticipate a child's first words.

That was the truth.

I stood there.

I listened.

I let the noise of the street pass around us.

For once, I did not issue an order.

I did not demand an answer.

I did not try to control the moment.

The girl moved her lips.

Her voice was barely audible above the people walking past.

And though I had been desperate to hear her speak, I realized I was listening for much more than a voice.

I was listening for something that might tell me why Sophie's face was looking back at us from the sidewalk.

<a
