7 – I Kept Comparing Two Identical Faces Until I Realized the One Thing My Money Could Never Give Me Was an Explanation

I had spent years believing that uncertainty was temporary.

Find the right person.

Ask the right question.

Apply enough pressure.

Eventually, something would become clear.

That was how I had learned to deal with problems.

It was not a particularly kind way of living.

I know that now.

But it was familiar.

And familiarity had always made me feel secure.

On that sidewalk, nothing familiar was helping.

I was standing beside Sophie.

Her hand was in mine.

The little girl with the rabbit was still sitting near the flower stand.

And I could not stop looking between them.

I knew I was repeating myself.

I knew I had already compared their eyes.

Their noses.

Their mouths.

Their hair.

But I kept doing it.

Again.

And again.

I thought that if I looked long enough, I would discover something I had missed.

A small difference.

Some feature that would make me feel foolish for being so shocked.

I wanted to feel foolish.

That would have been easier.

I could have laughed at myself later.

I could have told Sophie that people sometimes resembled one another.

We could have gone home.

The afternoon could have returned to normal.

But every time I looked at the girl in red, the same truth met me.

She looked exactly like my daughter.

Her gray eyes had the same shape.

Her chestnut curls fell around the same face.

Even with her hair unbrushed, I could recognize Sophie's features in every part of her.

I could not explain it away.

I was beginning to understand that I might have to live with the uncertainty, at least for that moment.

That frightened me.

I was not accustomed to waiting for understanding.

I was accustomed to producing it.

Or believing I could.

Sophie stood quietly beside me.

I looked down at her.

Her cream dress had a neat, full shape.

The ivory bow sat among her curls.

Her appearance was so carefully arranged that it seemed almost impossible to imagine her looking untidy.

Then I glanced at the other child.

The faded dark-red dress.

The worn shoes.

The unbrushed hair.

And I realized I did not have to imagine Sophie looking that way.

The image was in front of me.

I felt ashamed of how strongly that affected me.

A child's worth was not determined by the condition of her shoes.

I knew that.

At least, I would have said I knew it.

Yet I had spent much of my life surrounding the people I loved with expensive things.

I had treated comfort as proof that I was doing my job.

A beautiful dress.

A protected car.

A safe journey through the city.

Those were things I could provide.

And I had provided them.

Without hesitation.

But I had not been able to answer my daughter's question.

I had not been able to explain why she was looking at her own face on someone else.

The realization left me uncomfortable.

I had confused protection with understanding.

The two were not the same.

I could protect Sophie from many dangers.

I could place her inside an armored vehicle.

I could make sure she was never left alone in the places where my enemies might find her.

But I could not control what she discovered about the world.

I could not make every confusing thing disappear.

And I could not promise that I would always have an explanation ready.

I looked toward the waiting car.

For a moment, I imagined the simple act of opening its door.

Helping Sophie inside.

Moving away from the sidewalk.

It would have been easy.

Too easy.

I had spent years moving away from things I did not want to see.

Sometimes I did it with money.

Sometimes with threats.

Sometimes simply by refusing to pay attention.

I had become very good at deciding which parts of the world were allowed to inconvenience me.

This was different.

I was looking at a child who shared my daughter's face.

And I could not make myself turn away.

I looked at the rabbit again.

Beige.

Soft.

Held close.

I wondered whether the girl had heard Sophie's question.

She had been close enough.

But the street was noisy.

I could not be sure.

If she had heard it, I wondered what she thought.

Was she as confused as Sophie?

Had she noticed their matching faces before we stopped?

Did she understand why I kept staring?

I did not know.

I was beginning to recognize how much of the moment existed beyond my knowledge.

That was unfamiliar.

It made me uncomfortable.

But it also forced me to pay attention.

The little girl did not owe me an explanation simply because her face unsettled me.

She was not responsible for making my afternoon understandable.

She was a child.

That truth should have been obvious from the beginning.

Instead, I had needed several minutes to accept it.

I looked at Sophie.

Her fingers were curled around mine again.

I remembered the moment she had pulled away.

My body had reacted instantly.

I had expected an attacker.

I had reached toward my weapon.

Now I wondered what that said about me.

My daughter had seen something astonishing.

I had assumed it was dangerous.

There was a difference between those two reactions.

One came from innocence.

The other came from the life I had chosen.

Looking back, that difference hurts to admit.

I wanted Sophie to see the world differently from me.

I wanted her to notice people rather than threats.

I wanted her to ask questions rather than assume the worst.

And on that afternoon, she had done exactly that.

She had stopped because she saw another child.

Not because she suspected danger.

Not because someone had warned her.

Because she recognized something familiar.

Something so familiar that it frightened and fascinated her.

I had almost missed the meaning of that moment by reaching for a weapon.

The thought made me loosen my shoulders.

My hand remained around Sophie's.

I turned back toward the flower stand.

I noticed the colors again.

Bright flowers in carefully arranged groups.

A clean display beside an expensive shopping area.

Below it, a child in a worn dress.

It was the same scene I had been staring at.

But my thoughts had changed.

I was no longer looking only for differences between the girls.

I was beginning to notice how much I had assumed about the world around them.

I had assumed Sophie would be safe because I was powerful.

I had assumed that money made most problems manageable.

I had assumed that if I did not recognize a threat, I could identify it quickly.

And I had assumed that knowing my daughter meant I would always understand what happened to her.

Every one of those assumptions felt weaker now.

I looked into the other child's gray eyes.

I could not tell her story from her clothes.

I could not explain her resemblance to Sophie.

I could not even say with certainty what she had whispered over the noise of the street.

Those were the facts.

They were frustratingly few.

But they were all I had.

I thought about the years I had spent demanding certainty from other people.

I wondered how often I had mistaken confidence for knowledge.

How often I had accepted an answer because it sounded complete.

How often I had believed something simply because I wanted it to be true.

I did not like those questions.

They were not flattering.

But the little girl sitting in front of me made them unavoidable.

Sophie looked up.

I met her eyes.

I wanted to tell her I would find an answer.

The promise almost came out.

But I stopped.

I did not know whether an answer was available.

And I did not want to promise her something I could not yet provide.

Instead, I kept holding her hand.

I looked at the girl in red.

I accepted that I was seeing two children with the same face.

I accepted that I had no explanation.

For a man who had spent years pretending he could control everything, that was a difficult thing to admit.

But it was the first honest conclusion I had reached since Sophie stopped walking.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Armored Car Was Still Waiting When I
