PART 10 – The Person Waiting Outside the Workshop Who Knew More About My Father Than We Did

The door opened before anyone reached it.

Not violently.

Not with force.

It simply moved inward, revealing a figure standing in the fading afternoon light.

For one second, I expected Richard Vale.

I expected someone connected to the past we had spent days uncovering.

Instead, I saw a woman.

She was older, maybe around sixty, with tired eyes and silver hair pulled back neatly.

She looked at the four of us standing inside the workshop.

Then her eyes landed on the notebook in my hands.

Her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You found it,” she said.

Nobody answered.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at him.

“My name is Claire Morgan.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way Adrian reacted told me it meant something to him.

“You.”

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

Claire looked at him.

“You knew I would come eventually.”

“What are you doing here?” Adrian asked.

Her expression hardened.

“Making sure the truth doesn’t disappear again.”

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Claire looked at the notebook.

“It means your father was not the only person keeping records.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another piece of a story that seemed to have no ending.

“Explain,” I said.

Claire took a slow breath.

“I worked with your mother.”

Everything stopped.

My mother.

That single phrase changed the room.

“You knew Laura?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Claire stepped inside.

“She found me when she was searching for someone who could verify the information she discovered about Richard.”

Daniel crossed his arms.

“And why should we trust you?”

Claire looked at him.

“You shouldn’t.”

That answer surprised everyone.

She continued.

“Your father taught your mother something important.”

“What?”

“Trust should be earned through actions, not words.”

She reached into her bag.

Inside was another folder.

But this one looked newer.

Less hidden.

Less like something meant to disappear.

“I have evidence.”

Adrian looked suspicious.

“Why didn’t you give this to Sarah’s father?”

Claire’s expression changed.

“Because I tried.”

The room became quiet.

“What happened?”

She looked at the floor.

“He refused.”

I frowned.

“That doesn’t sound like him.”

“No.”

Claire nodded.

“Because he knew what would happen if the evidence became public at the wrong time.”

She placed the folder on the table.

“He was not afraid of losing.”

She looked at me.

“He was afraid of what winning would cost.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were copies of messages.

Financial records.

And one document that immediately caught my attention.

A legal agreement between Richard Vale and someone else.

Someone whose name had been hidden.

I read it.

Then my hands went still.

Daniel noticed.

“What?”

I handed it to him.

His face changed.

“No.”

The signature belonged to someone we knew.

Someone connected to our family.

Someone who had been present throughout the years.

Someone we never questioned.

Because we never had a reason to.

Claire watched our reaction.

“Your father suspected this person years ago.”

I looked at her.

“Who?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she pointed to the notebook.

“Read the last page.”

I looked down.

The warning my father wrote suddenly felt different.

Do not trust the person who arrives after the truth is found.

At first, I thought he meant someone would come after us.

But maybe he meant something else.

Maybe he meant someone had been waiting.

Someone close.

Someone patient.

The realization made my stomach turn.

Daniel looked at me.

“We need to find out who else knew.”

I closed the notebook.

And for the first time, I understood the real danger.

The truth was not buried because it was impossible to find.

It was buried because someone had worked very hard to make sure nobody searched in the right place.
